About Me & About Sugar:


I grew up in a house that had absolutely no sugar!

My early childhood was spent in dark gyms with my bodybuilder parents. Later on, their body concepts changed and shaped the rest of my own values: they went from shaping the body from the outside to working on the body from the inside.

They got into Macrobiotics, triathlons, healthy living, and a diet for longevity. This shaped my concept of health – from the inside out.

It is now apparent to me that health is a lifestyle, not an entitlement, but something you work on ongoing. It wasn't always that way...

When I left my healthy home, I ate all the junk food I could get my hands on. This had an immediate impact on my body, my overall health, and my emotions. I was very sick and the sickness snowballed with added antibiotics.

One day, I quit sugar completely in a drastic move. The symptoms I faced resembled coming down off of any toxic substance, which blew my mind. Also, there were cravings: I would have done anything to get my hands on candy or anything sweet. I was, obviously, hooked.

I started Sugar Hooker Entertainment (SHE) in 2004 as a record label, but it quickly became something else: a platform for community among young women with an agenda of health, self esteem, and support. We made clothes, we made friends, and we made waves.

I am lucky to have been raised in the health industry with family and friends working to make healthy, green, sustainable living a mainstream concept. I turn to them for advice, tips, and perspective.

To be healthy is a life long path, not a diet. It is a commitment to oneself for the long haul.

I don't pretend to be a certified expert. I'm not a doctor nor a nutritionist. I'm just a girl who strongly believes that sugar is bad for us, that sugar is best in moderation for those who aren't addicted to it.

Sugar is a drug. Use it recreationally and at your own risk. Know what it is you're putting in your body. If it were a pill, would you take it? How does it benefit you or hurt you? What are the long term effects of use on your body?

I see food as fuel. You are what you eat. Why don't we see sugar for what it is?

This is a site dedicated to the healthy side of who I am and how I live my life sugar free , unrefined, and not artificial.

Factoids:
The average American consumes a shocking 150 pounds of sugar a year, or roughly 20 teaspoons every day.

Sweeteners may contribute to all sorts of health problems beyond the obvious obesity: high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hyperactivity, insomnia, and acne.
